Understanding the pain
In Chinese medicine, low back pain is not treated the same way depending on its presumed origin. Three scenarios come up very often:
This distinction is not merely academic: it directly guides the choice of points and whether or not to use moxibustion (heat), very useful in cases of Cold but less suited to acute stagnation.
Acupuncture acts on the local flow of Qi and Blood in the meridians that run through the lower back region. In practical terms, it aims to release the blockage behind the pain rather than simply masking the sensation of pain. For a recent, straightforward episode of low back pain, relief from the very first session is common; chronic pain that has been present for years generally requires deeper work over several sessions.
The vast majority of low back pain is described as “common”, without seriousness. But certain signs should prompt you to see a doctor quickly, before turning to acupuncture:
As a physician, I systematically check for these elements when taking your history before suggesting acupuncture treatment — this is precisely the advantage of being cared for by a medical doctor rather than a non-medical practitioner.
Local heat (a hot-water bottle) if sensitive to cold, gentle movement rather than prolonged bed rest (which often makes things worse), light stretching: these simple steps can already bring some relief while waiting for your consultation.
If in doubt about the seriousness of back pain, see your treating physician first, or an emergency department if any of the warning signs above is present.
