The symbolic image

Symbolic illustration of the Heart meridian in Chinese medicine

In Chinese tradition, the Heart meridian is regarded as the “Emperor” of the organs and of the psyche. It plays a central role in emotional harmony, in the balance of the meridians and in mental clarity. Its energy, the Shen (the mind/spirit), is closely linked to intellectual activity and inner peace.

How it works in the Chinese model

The Heart meridian fulfils two fundamental functions: governing the blood, ensuring its proper circulation and balance, and housing the mind (the Shen), regulating the emotions and psychic stability. Any disturbance of the Heart leads to imbalances of the blood and the mind, with repercussions on overall health.

Emotional dimension

According to the theory of the Five Elements, the Heart is associated with joy. When balanced, joy nourishes the mind and the body. However, excessive joy can weaken the Heart and become a source of mental agitation.

In practice

The Heart meridian is the vital centre of our energy and emotions. It regulates the blood, houses the mind, and profoundly influences our physical and psychological well-being. Caring for the Heart’s balance means cultivating inner peace and harmony throughout the whole body.
