The symbolic image

Symbolic illustration of the Small Intestine meridian in Chinese medicine

In traditional Chinese medicine, the Small Intestine meridian is the sorter. On the digestive level, it receives food and drink from the Stomach, then separates them into “pure” and “impure” fractions. The pure elements are directed to the Spleen-Pancreas to nourish the body, while the impurities are sent to the Large Intestine and the Bladder to be eliminated. Symbolically, it helps us distinguish what is essential from what is not.

How it works in the Chinese model

After the Stomach has done its work, the Small Intestine continues this separation between what should nourish the body and what should be eliminated, directing the pure substances toward the Spleen and the impure substances toward the Large Intestine and the Bladder.

Emotional dimension

It represents clarity of judgment: taking in various pieces of information, sorting through them, and then choosing what makes sense.

In daily life

Taking the time to sort through your thoughts and priorities, without becoming overwhelmed by an excess of information, supports the balance of this meridian.

In practice

The Small Intestine meridian is the centre of discernment and clarity, both physically and emotionally. When it functions well, it ensures optimal nutrient absorption, as well as better management of ideas and emotions. By caring for this balance, we support not only harmonious digestion, but also clear, orderly thinking — essential for moving forward serenely in life.
