The symbolic image
The Liver envisions and organises; the Gallbladder helps us decide and act. It is the function that turns a plan into a concrete decision. The Gallbladder meridian plays an essential role in our capacity to make decisions.
How it works in the Chinese model
- Governing judgment and decision-making: while the Liver organises our inner life, the Gallbladder determines our capacity to make decisions. It embodies individual courage, initiative and determination — Chinese even distinguishes a “big Gallbladder”, denoting bravery, from a “small Gallbladder”, signalling timidity or fear.
- Influence on vitality and movement: like the Kidney, the Gallbladder governs drive and vitality. It supplies Qi to the tendons to ensure their mobility and flexibility, illustrated by the master point Yanglingquan (GB34) — a function that complements the Liver’s, which nourishes the tendons through the blood.
- Impact on sleep and well-being: a balanced Gallbladder meridian supports restorative sleep; conversely, its weakness can cause early waking and difficulty falling back asleep.
Emotional dimension
The Gallbladder is associated with balanced courage: neither impulsiveness nor permanent indecision. Its balance allows us to choose, then move forward. Together with the Liver, it embodies the union of planning and action.
When this dynamic is disrupted
Physical symptoms
- Temple headaches, dizziness.
- Visual disturbances.
- A bitter taste in the mouth.
- Deafness, nausea.
Emotional symptoms
- Difficulty taking action, shyness, worry.
- Bitterness, resentment.
- Difficulty clarifying one’s feelings.
In daily life
Giving yourself time to decide, without rushing or ruminating endlessly, helps preserve the balance of this meridian. Going to bed before 11pm, the hour of its peak energetic strengthening, is particularly beneficial for it.
In practice
- Energy exercises: Qi Gong and Tai Chi to support tendon flexibility and the smooth flow of energy.
- Acupressure and acupuncture: meridian points, notably Yanglingquan (GB34), to support vitality and mobility.
- Support for decision-making: clarify your priorities, in writing if needed, to make it easier to take action.
- Sleep hygiene: go to bed before 11pm to respect the meridian’s hour of peak energy.
The Gallbladder meridian is the pillar of our capacity to decide and to act. As the Liver’s loyal companion, it transforms reflection into movement and plans into reality. Caring for its balance means cultivating balanced courage and the freedom to move forward without becoming stuck in doubt.
