After the session: what’s normal to feel

Relaxation, tiredness, a possible reaction on a pain or migraine: what’s normal to feel after a session, and when to contact me.

An acupuncture session is a moment that touches the body deeply. It is normal to feel effects in the hours or days that follow. Here are the most frequent reactions, so you can recognise them.

Most often: relaxation and wellbeing

Most of the time, you feel a sense of relaxation and wellbeing, an impression of lightness and calm. Many people sleep particularly well the night after the session.

Sometimes: significant tiredness

You may also sometimes feel very tired, with a need to lie down. This is a frequent reaction: listen to your body, rest, and if possible plan a quiet moment after the session. If you feel very tired or light-headed, wait before driving.

For pain and migraines: a possible reaction

In some people, the session can temporarily worsen the pain or trigger a migraine attack for 48 to 72 hours. This reaction is well known and is not a cause for concern; it does not mean anything went wrong. Continue your usual treatments and let me know at the next session, so the treatment can be adjusted.

All these reactions are normal and not serious.

When should you contact me?

Contact the practice if you notice:

  • pain that worsens beyond 72 hours;
  • fever;
  • warm, swollen redness or discharge at a needle site;
  • significant bruising or persistent faintness.

Very rare, but important to know: in case of sudden breathlessness or chest pain after a session, call the emergency services (15 in France).
